Achieving Serenity in Addiction

Although a firm atheist, the Serenity Prayer, written by Reinhold Niebuhr is a prayer that has always touched something in me. Perhaps it is in the simplicity of the words that I find a sense of peace, or that it can be applied to every person in every circumstance. But how about applying it specifically to addiction? What are the things I cannot change?

Well firstly, I am an addict. I believe I have always been and always will be an addict. However, it took courage to change from being an addict, to an addict in recovery, and wisdom for me is in accepting how easily this could change without maintaining my program. Recovery; I choose it for myself, one moment, one decision, one day at a time.
