Before deciding what to do about drinking alcohol, it is helpful to know if the amount you are drinking is considered alcohol abuse and what the options are with regards to controlling your intake.
The following information is taken from the Department of Health:
Guidelines for Men: The Department of Health recommends that Men should drink no more than 3-4 units of alcohol a day, and no more than 21 units of alcohol in any one week. They also recommend at least 2 alcohol free days a week
Guidelines for women: The Department of Health recommends that women should drink no more than 3 units in any one day and no more than 14 units of alcohol in any one week. Again with at least 2 alcohol free days
If you are a pregnant woman or are trying to conceive the advice is that preferable you should not drink at all, but if you do choose to then you should drink no more than
Other factors to be taken into consideration are you age, BMI (body mass index) and general health. Also if you are taking other drugs, prescribed or otherwise as this can impact on the effect alcohol has and how it is metabolized. Also if friends, loved ones or relatives feel you are drinking too much.
If having considered the recommended guidelines and other factors you feel you are drinking excessively, you may want information on how to cut down or moderate you drinking so you don’t develop an alcohol addiction.
- Tips that have proven to be helpful in some cases are:
- Sipping your drinks slowly
- Diluting your alcohol with non-alcoholic drinks
- Making sure you have eaten prior to drinking
- Alternating your alcoholic beverages with non-alcoholic beverages
- Drinking lower percentage alcoholic drinks (for example beer instead of wine)
- Having alcohol free days
If you have already tried these methods to no avail, you may want to consider stopping drinking all together. Regaining control over your alcohol consumption if you have lost control can be very difficult and in some cases impossible.
