For any person trying to overcome an addiction, there is always the fear of addiction relapse, which will be a constant worry. For some, this motivates them to work harder and remain abstinent, but for others, it can put a strain on their recovery and result in them giving up as they think the process will be too challenging. One person who has fallen victim to addiction relapse many times over the years is Lamar Odom, who insists that he will now stay sober for good.

Warning Sign

Former LA Lakers star Odom has recently gone through treatment at a rehabilitation clinic to overcome his addiction; as part of his follow-on plan, he was to set up a stable support network to keep him on the right track. It has come to light that Lamar has fired his sober coach, who was a key person in his path to recovery; this may act as a hindrance in his recovery journey. In a recent interview, Lamar’s therapist said, “It’s a warning sign. We talk about warning signs in recovery, knowing triggers and warning signs, new behaviours. A warning sign is doing things that you’re not supposed to be doing or not doing things that you need to be doing. The good news is that you’ve already reached out.” Lamar has said that he does not blame his ex-wife Khloe Kardashian or her family for his drug addiction, as his divorce from Khloe and a life-threatening overdose is that which pushed him towards rehabilitation to get the help he so desperately needed.

‘Basically Just Committing Suicide’

Speaking of his excessive drug use, he said that he was ‘basically just committing suicide’. He appeared on Dr Travis Stork after his thirty-day stint in rehab and openly stated that he would ideally like to get back together with Khloe, even though she is now in a relationship with NBA star Tristan Thompson. His life has not been the easiest after his mother passed away when he was just twelve years old, and his son tragically died from sudden infant death syndrome as well, which could have been the catalyst that pushed him towards drugs. He has been to rehab on other occasions and has fallen victim to an addiction relapse, but this time he is determined to stay sober for good. He said, “I’m working every day. I want my wife back. But other than that, I just want to live a healthy, happy life. Khloe’s important to me, she’s been through all this with me, she stood right by my side, so I just want to repay her.”

You Become Numb

He was asked if the lavish lifestyle of his former spouse and her family and ‘the bubble’ were too much for him, but he replied, “No, it’s kind of what I always expected for myself. It’s just something that I have to learn to deal with. I won’t point the blame in anyone’s direction but myself. When you’re dealing with something like addiction, I know now that it’s a brain disease; that was important for me to know. My life has always been in front of the media and scrutiny, so it’s something by now I should know how to deal with. To my family and Khloe, I just want to tell them that I’m sorry for all that wasted time and energy.”

Lamar has stated that his priorities are now to make amends with his two children, Destiny and Lamar Jr, from a previous relationship with Liza Morales. He added, “When doing drugs, you become distant from everything, even your feelings; you become numb, just to restore what we had as a family, that’s everything to me.”

Overwhelming Fear

In many cases, the overwhelming fear of addiction relapse can prove too much for the individual, and he or she may be put off recovery altogether. The main thing to remember is that addiction relapse is not something that will be experienced by every recovering addict. If an individual does relapse, then this person may feel as if they have failed; this is certainly not the case, and they should not allow this to dishearten or discourage them from working towards a full recovery.
