Addictions treated: Alcohol, illegal drugs, prescription drugs.
Accommodation: This addiction treatment clinic has an urban location and clients have to deal with the reality of being in a busy town – a deliberate strategy to facilitate recovery and develop life skills for clients in the real world. The accommodation offers shared rooms, and clients take responsibility for their own personal housekeeping. The treatment centre accommodates 41 clients across two facilities; one for primary care, the other for secondary care.
Ethos: Treatment in the real world.
Treatment: The clinic aims to help clients rebuild their lives, gain confidence and self-worth, and to believe they can live a productive life free of addiction. It offers a 12 week abstinence-based primary treatment which is modular and tailored to individual needs. The programme combines a number of philosophies, including the 12 step approach, and provides detox if required, care planning, group work and one-to-one key worker sessions, as well as alternative therapies. An optional secondary programme is available to help clients work towards long-term recovery and re-integration into society.
Staff: Staff are committed and dedicated, and strive to on-going training and development to enable them to offer the best level of care and intervention.
Location and Profile
This centre is located in Farlington close to Portsmouth. This is the primary treatment facility for the group that run it. They also have a secondary treatment facility in Southsea.
The aim of the staff members at the centre is to offer their services in such a way so as to foster mutual trust and respect. The resident is the focus, and it is the job of the different professionals working at the center to tailor their services to meet the needs of the client – each person is treated as unique. The emphasis is always to help the individual understand that they have the ability to make good choices and to benefit from increased opportunities in life.
The accommodation at the centre provides a good level of comfort. During the first four weeks the individual will be supervised as they detox from alcohol and drugs.
The Treatment Team
During the first four weeks of their stay the client will be chaperoned by a team member and fully supported right around the clock. As soon as they arrive on location they will be given a named key worker. All the treatment team will be there to help the client, but this key worker will take a special interest them to ensure that they are able to get the most out of the program. The members of the team are expected to work within strict boundaries, and the clients are expected to respect these boundaries.
The Treatment Program
The treatment group was founded in 1998 and the program is divided into three separate steps.
The First Four Weeks – Step 1
This is when the individual will pass through detoxification. They will have a staff member with them at all times – if it is required the individual will have an RGN or GP supervising their detox. The person will also be introduced into group therapy and step work. They will also get to attend a cognitive and behaviour group. This is also the time when they will write their life story and share this with a therapist.
Primary Stage 2
This part of the program builds upon the good progress made in stage 1. The individual will go deeper into the 12 Steps, and they will be encouraged to develop trust. This is also a time when the individual will be given the opportunity to develop new skills that will benefit them in their future life. This will include such diverse topics as dealing with stress and managing money.
Secondary treatment is a 12 week program for those who have graduated from the primary stage. The aim of this program is to give clients an even greater ability to deal with the challenges of living sober.
Best Suited For
In order for the individual to succeed at the centre they will need to have already accepted that they have an addiction problem. They will also need to be willing to do whatever it takes to overcome this difficult. If the client is not really committed to living a sober life, they are unlikely to get much out of their time at the location.
This centre will be suitable for those individuals who have a reasonable amount of mobility.
